The Pros and Cons of Turning a Video Game into a Live Action Movie
First, let's get the full trailer of Halo: Forward Unto Dawn out of the way. (Thanks to the awesome
sangate for the link.)
Alright, let the babbling start...
Babe and I have always disagreed about whether or not there should be a Halo movie. (He said yes, I said no.) It's not something that I feel exclusively to Halo. I think most video games fit in this "Dude, don't ever go there" category. (The other exception that I can think of is Legend of Zelda: OoT--and with that, I would only trust someone like Peter Jackson to do it because the universe is so complicated.)
Video-games-turned-movies have a terrible track record. Um, Super Mario Bros? Street Fighter? Doom? (I'll give a nod of recognition to the Resident Evil franchise.)
And when you take something as iconic as a video game , you're going to get people mad. "That character would never do that!" "The casting is all wrong!" "That's not how the campaign played!" (Yes, we're nerds in the gaming fandom.) Plus, unless you happen to get a production crew that are gamers, I don't think they can connect with the characters the right way.
That being said, I think they did a pretty good job with the trailer for Forward Unto Dawn. I don't think I'm ever going to really care about the secondary characters the way I did about Johnson, Keyes (both), or Halsey, (Dude, they are SO young.) but you never know.
Initially, I was kind of irked that Steve Downes didn't do the Master Chief's voice. (I frowned for the entire trailer after he spoke when I watched it for the first time.) Then, I started thinking, you know, maybe's it ok. If we ever get a movie (or even if in this web series) and we happen to glimpse at John's face (I know, a blasphemous thought in and of itself), it would look ridiculous to have Downes' voice dubbed over.
Speaking of seeing John's face, I have to admit. I'm sort of amped about the casting of Master Chief. Daniel Cudmore (Colossus of the X-Men movies) is like the perfect dude. Who else is going to stand a foot above everyone else? Plus, he's got a face that I think could work for John, if they ever did decide to go in that direction. So, yeah, I'll be using his handsome face as a reference for fics from now on.
So, am I pro-Halo movie? Not yet. We'll see how the web series works out. (Which, I'm sure is what Microsoft is waiting for, if they ever greenlight a movie.)
