As a boy, Eugene didn't have much to smile about. Being abandoned by your parents for no apparent reason had an ability to make one bitter with life, Eugene had once told another kid in the orphanage.
But all of that changed when Miss Anna came to him with a gift for his tenth birthday.
It was a book.
The Tales of Flynnigan Rider.
He opened the book, smelling the old pages, feeling the crinkled paper under his small hands. It didn’t matter to him that the book was second-hand, it was the only tangible object outside his well-worn clothing that he could call his own.
He flipped the pages until he found the beginning of the book. Eugene didn’t just read the book; he devoured it. For the first time, he had a male role model in his life: Flynn Rider. He was brave! He was strong! And, most importantly, he was rich! Eugene didn’t know why Flynn Rider seemed to like the company of girls so much – he still thought they were rather annoying – but it didn’t matter much to him. He still wanted to be like the adventuresome and handsome rogue.
This book and its adventures shouldn’t be kept to himself, he decided. As soon as he was finished, he called the rest of the kids to him and read the book aloud to them. When he read the whole story –he couldn’t stop in the middle! – he saw Miss Anna standing at the doorframe next to the rest of the kids who were listening intently.
After she tucked the younger children to bed, she came back to the room where Eugene was still flipping through the pages.
“That was very kind of you to share your gift with the other children, Eugene,” she said softly.
“I’m not Eugene anymore, Miss Anna. I’m Flynn Rider,” he said with a wide smile.

This is marvelous, my dear. Little!Eugene. :) So cute with the other children and latching onto the book and the character of Flynn.
I wish there was more fantastic Tangled fic like this. But honestly, it would so suck me in. I'm really looking forward to your big bang Tangled fic.

They had finally made it.
After the destruction of Reach, the destruction of the Halo ring and the destruction of Unyielding Hierophant, it felt good to see Earth – untarnished and untouched by the Covenant – in all of its blue, brown and green glory.
“I didn’t even know if it was possible for you to smile.”
He turned to Cortana who was looking at him with unabashed interest.
“We kept the Covenant fleet from attacking Earth,” he said by way of explanation.
“They’ll regroup quickly,” warned Cortana, shifting her gaze to the unsuspecting planet below them.
She was right, of course. But, for now, John would take this brief reprieve from the fight and appreciate the fact they were able to destroy the armada of ships that had earth in its crosshairs.
“I’ll be ready when they come.”
“We both will, Chief,” she said with a faint smile on her lips.

The gray haze of his teenage years, clouded by his father’s constant disapproval, seemed to evaporate. The higher the altitude, the more the pain of his past seemed to fade away.
He listened closely to the words of his instructor and followed the instructions he was given. As the flight continued, the more certain John became of one fact: he was born to fly.
As he controlled the craft through a cluster of clouds, he knew he was going to be a pilot and not run the family business.
Instead of an unsettling feeling, John felt the weight of the world come off his shoulders. He was like the plane he was flying; he wouldn’t be defying gravity, but the will of his father.
He would be free to feel alive.

As she swirled the banto rods in her hands, circling her sparring partner, she felt a calmness settle over her despite the fact she was on the attack.
Suddenly, she struck.
He didn’t expect for her to attack so quickly or efficiently. Every move she made was precise, no energy was wasted on superfluous moves.
He tried to block her relentless attack, but she still held the advantage. She spun around him and jumped on his back, holding the banto rod to his throat.
“Do you concede?” She said, her voice cold despite the elation that she has finally caught him off-guard.
Several long seconds passed, before he nodded. “I do.”
She hopped off his shoulders and grinned at her companion.
“You have improved greatly, Teyla. You will do our people proud.”
Teyla felt a new, more fulfilling surge of satisfaction buzz through her. “It is because you have been an excellent teacher.”
Her father looked at her and gave her a smile of his own. “And you, my daughter, have been an excellent student.”

She missed Kitty.
Her mommy didn’t understand why she kept saying the word kitty all the time. When Mary asked her daddy where Kitty was, he called their pet cat and showed it to her.
They didn’t understand.
She took out a piece of paper and her crayons. Carefully, she picked out the light blue and purple crayons and started drawing her Kitty. She stuck out of her tongue as she carefully tried to remember all the things about him. His purple spots. His furry fur. His big smile.
Finally, when she was finished, she smiled. There was Kitty!
She ran to her parents and showed her drawing. “Kitty!” she said, smiling.
Her parents gave her a confused smile. They taped the picture next to her bed, but they still didn’t understand.
That was ok though. Mary had her picture of Kitty. Now she could see him all the time!
Several nights passed. Each evening after her parents tucked her in bed, Mary would hop out of her bed and open the closet door, but the only thing that was on the other side were her clothes and toys. She would walk back to her bed, a little sad, give the picture of Kitty a good night kiss and go to sleep.
One morning, she woke up early. She knew her parents hadn’t woken up yet because she didn’t smell that stinky coffee they made every morning. She turned to her hand drawn picture of Kitty and smiled. Maybe she would add Mike Wazowski to the picture today.
Before she could hop out of her bed to find her bright green crayon, the door handle started to rattle. But it wasn’t coming from the door from the hallway. It was coming from the closet door!
Kitty walked in with a smile on his face.
“Kitty!” She said happily.
He walked across the room and scooped her in a giant hug.
Mary smiled as she hugged him back. His fur tickled her nose, but she didn’t care. Her Kitty was back!
He gently set her on the ground. “I missed you, Boo.”
She walked over to her wall and took down the picture she had drawn. She held it out for him to see.
“I guess that means you missed me too,” he rumbled.
She giggled as she jumped over his tail. She had missed her kitty!
“Mike–you remember him, right–”
“Mike Wazowski!” she replied cheerfully.
“Yeah, him,” Kitty said with a smile, “He rebuilt your door so now we can see each other. But, I need to go back now. I’ll see you soon, alright?”
She nodded and ran towards him. She squeezed him tight. Maybe the next time he would bring Mike Wazowski! He was always doing silly things.
He stood up and walked to the closet door. “Be a good girl.”
“Bye Kitty.”
The door closed. Mary ran up to the door and opened it, but all she saw were her clothes and toys. It was still ok. She knew her Kitty would be back soon.

Rodney couldn’t find Sheppard. He wasn’t answering him on the radio. He wasn’t in the Gate Room. Or his quarters. Frustrated, Rodney decided to pick up a snack before resuming his search for the suddenly-elusive Sheppard.
As he walked in, he saw Teyla, Sheppard, Ronon and Radek –Radek?!– huddled together in the corner of the mess hall. Something was going on.
He marched over there, determined to give them a piece of his mind about leaving him out of the loop, when Teyla flashed him a conspiratorial smile.
All traces of annoyance fled.
John stepped to the side and let him into the tight huddle. “What we’re about to say can not be repeated to anyone. Especially Elizabeth.”
Rodney sputtered for a few seconds. What could possibly be secretive enough to keep Elizabeth out of the loop?
“We are planning a surprise party for her. Sheppard says they are popular on your planet,” Ronon said, looking confused at the notion.
Rodney felt a smile spread across his face. This was a secret he could keep.
Together, they planned every detail of the party from the cake flavor –no lemon – to the big gift – John had volunteered to be in charge of that. Rodney had gleefully offered to be the one who would keep Elizabeth busy while they set up the party –having the ability to complain about anything suddenly was an attribute.
Once everything had been decided, the small group broke apart.
Rodney smiled as he walked down the hallway. Being in the loop was fun.

Jean-Luc appreciated the simple things in life.
Reading a good book. Looking at artifacts from ancient worlds. Listening to classical music. But, nothing beat drinking a good cup of strong Earl Grey tea.
The replicators on the Enterprise did a decent job of duplicating the essence of the tea, but it couldn’t compare to the rich flavors of the real thing.
He was sipping on that tea when the chime sounded in his ready room.
“Come.”
Beverly came walking in with her hands behind her back. “Beverly,” he greeted, surprised. His CMO had just gotten back from a trip to Earth. He didn’t expect to see her until the senior staff meeting later in the day. “How was your meeting?”
“You know how I feel about having to lead those things,” she replied dryly.
He leaned back in his chair and looked at her. “You love it,” he accused.
She flashed a smile. “Guilty as charged.” She took a step towards his desk. “I’m about to head to sickbay, but I wanted to give you this.” She pulled his hands out of behind him and held out a large box of Earl Grey tea.
Picard couldn’t help but to grin at the sight. It was even his favorite brand.
“I know how you feel about the replicated tea,” she said with a mischievous grin.
His eyebrows went down. He didn’t remember mentioning that to her before. Suddenly, he knew how she knew: the PSI wave link they had experienced for a short time.
He took the box from her. “Thank you,” he said sincerely.
“You’re welcome, Jean-Luc.”
“I don’t suppose I could convince you to stay here a little longer to share a properly brewed cup of tea, could I?”
Beverly pretended to consider his suggestion. “I don’t know, I think I could be convinced,” she said with a grin.
Yes, he thought with a answering smile of his own, there was nothing like a good cup of strong Earl Grey tea.
