Appreciation, an Eleventh Hour fic
Episode: Miracles

“You were right.”

It wasn’t the words he said that caused Rachel to look at Hood strangely; in fact, he was one of the most humble men she had met. Rather, it was the soft, apologetic tone that caught her attention. “About what?” she asked.

“That I was taking this case too personally.” He smiled sheepishly. “I guess I was. Thank you for pointing that out to me.”

She nodded curtly, still feeling slightly awkward at the confrontation. “You’re welcome.”

He shifted in his seat, getting a better view of Helena. “Towards the end…when it was clear that my wife wasn’t going to make it, I begged for a miracle. And when she didn’t get better, I guess I became a little bitter.”

Rachel kept her gaze on the road. “No one can save everyone, Hood. Not even you.”

“I know, but I thought if I could save anyone, it would be her,” he admitted softly. “Anyway, after she died, I withdrew. It was--is--hard to even think of her name.”

She turned into the parking lot of the airport, her eyebrow slightly raised. “I know. You still haven’t told me what it was.”

“Really?” Surely he had mentioned it in passing.

She nodded. “I’m sure.”

Hood frowned, still having trouble believing that. “For three months, I couldn’t talk to anyone. It wasn’t until Frank came to my house and talked to me that I ever considered moving on with my life. He made me see that though my wife had passed, I still had the knowledge to save others. He made me look outside of myself--like you did last night.”

She smiled self-consciously. “That’s what I’m here for.” Rachel found an open parking spot and pulled in. “So,” she said, turning to him, “are you ever going to tell me her name?”

He shook his head. “Not today, Rachel, but maybe some day.”
