Author's Notes: I started writing this fic back in February, before E3.  Although the E3 trailer is referenced, I didn't alter my story's plotlines to make it fit within what we saw (much). So, this is an AU based on the random spoilers, articles, trailers, books, that came out before E3. 

There are references from just about everything: The Fall of Reach, First Strike, Glasslands, the Forerunner Saga, Human Weakness, Connectivity, the terminals from Halo: CE Anniversary and Halo 3, the Forward Unto Dawn trailer and every game from CE to Reach. I did, however, make it "user friendly". If you haven't read the books, there should be enough background information to get you through. (Although, you probably should read Connectivity to make the most sense of this fic.)

Thank you goes to my beta for finding typos, not letting me slack off when I rushed through the ending of a chapter, applauded me when I nailed it out of the park and made sure that John and Cortana didn't go out of character.  Another huge thanks to danceswithgary for creating some epic artwork. Technically, this isn't quite a WIP because it's finished. It's been beta'd though I haven't had time to read the notes, therefore, I still consider it a WIP. :D

Takes place in my Halo AU. Warning for some mild swearing.

There were but a scant few who knew exactly how Cortana enjoyed her caffeinated beverage. Her heart started beating faster. Could it be that John was ready to see the truth about her? That she knew nothing about Halsey’s deception?

A smile passed over her lips. Maybe things were going to be alright, despite the devastation that had occurred. “John...” She twisted her chair and saw a familiar face. But it wasn’t the one she was expecting to see. “...son,” she awkwardly finished.

“Sorry I ain’t the Chief,” he said sincerely. “But when I heard that you’re back on Alpha Team and cleared of all charges, I thought ya could use this.” He held out the cup for her to take. “Took the damn fools long enough to figure things out.”

She reached out and took the mug, inhaling the roasted aroma.

Had it only been four days since she had a drink of coffee?

“I take it they didn’t accommodate your caffeine addiction,” Johnson said, leaning on the edge of her desk.

“No.” They had treated her like a war criminal. Locked away. Given MREs as food rations. But Ackerson had made sure he had a cup of freshly brewed coffee every time he came to interrogate her. The bastard.

Well, all of the summer challenges have been finished and I'm moving onto fall projects (hello aiw_big_bang and het_bigbang!)  I've got the three big bang fics that I have been rambling about since like March and a dozen or so drabbles from day_by_drabble.  You know, the drabbles suprised me in what I didn't write (What? No Fringe? No Alice in Wonderland? No HALO?!?) and what I did (Um, hello, a Fraiser drabble?) but it was a lot of fun.  I suspect I'll be in for the next round until it's during Christmas and I've got my hands full with yuletide and a certain advent project that I am majorly excited for (if it happens).
