Absolutely Charming, a Tangled fic

Rating: S for Squeaky
Category: Sappiness is a category, right?
Fandom: Tangled
Characters: Eugene/Rapunzel
Summary: If Blondie didn’t think they were charming, how in the world could he compare? Thieving and running from the law didn’t seem like Charming attributes to him.
Author's Notes: This is totally and completely inspired by my fellow Tangled!fangirl, [livejournal.com profile] just_a_dram who is awesomely awesome in her Tangled!awesomeness.

"I’ve been reading today."

Eugene turned towards Rapunzel, who had found him in the middle of the palace's main court. Her lips were turned down in an uncharacteristic frown. He wondered what, exactly, she could have read to put her in such a mood. "Oh really?" he asked as he leaned against the tall court wall.

She nodded. "The Queen--I mean, Mother encouraged me to read some books about the surrounding kingdoms. There was Princess Cinderella...and Princess Aurora...and, of course, the recently crowned Princess Belle."

A sinking feeling settled in the pit of Eugene's stomach. Though Rapunzel seemed ignorant of the queen's true motives, he was not foolish. He knew exactly why she requested Rapunzel to read those books. She wanted her daughter to find her own Prince Charming.

And that, decidedly, was not Eugene Fitzherbert.

The king and queen were grateful to him, of course. Rapunzel's recount of what happened after he escaped the royal guard, combined with Maximus' passionate head nodding, had convinced them to give Flynn Rider a full pardon for his past crimes.

That, however, did not mean they wanted him as a future son-in-law.

"So," he said, careful to keep his voice even, "what did you think?"

"The princes didn't seem particularly charming," she sighed. The frown was back. She plucked an innocent flower and twirled it in her fingers.

"They didn't?" Eugene sputtered. The well-known princes were always seen as role models by the young boys--even orphans--in the area. If Blondie didn't think they were charming, how in the world could he compare? Thieving and running from the law didn't seem like Charming attributes to him.

She shook her head. "What's charming about a prince that doesn't chase after the woman he loves when she dropped her shoe?" She faced him and smiled widely. "You're always looking after my frying pan."

Eugene felt a smile tug on his lips. Despite living in the castle with dozen of palace guards at her disposal, Blondie still insisted on bringing her frying pan with her in her room every night.

"Plus, you had thugs, not faeries, break you out of prison," Rapunzel added with an impish grin.

Well, that was definitely more manly, Eugene conceded.

"And," she continued, "none of them ever sang and danced the way you did!"

She was never going to forget that, was she? Though his dream was significantly different than what it was when they had stepped inside the Snuggly Duckling nearly a month before. Not that anyone but Blondie needed to know. Eugene was slowly adjusting to the idea of being a sap.

"So," Eugene said, draping an arm over the castle wall, "no Prince Charming for the Lost Princess?"

She scrunched up her nose. "No. They don't even let the Princesses save them! They aren't like you, Eugene. I rescued you from Hookhand and the others at the Snuggly Duckling...and my hair helped us to escape in the cave where we almost drowned. Not to mention when Max started dragging you away on the morning of my birthday--"

"I get the point, Blondie." Embarrassment and annoyance decided to make an appearance. Yes, she had saved him, in more ways than one, but his ego didn't like to be reminded of just how he much he relied on her.

She leaned her head against his chest. "We save each other, Eugene."

All traces of ire melted away at her simple statement, wrapped in a voice of innocent honesty. He let his arm fall from the top of the wall and wrap around her. She smelled like sunshine and hope, a still-unfamiliar combination after he had spent so long hiding in the shadows, looking for his elusive happiness.

No, he would never be Prince Charming.

But he was alright with that.

"Besides," she said, not lifting her head from its position, "none of them can smolder the way you can."

A cocky grin spread over his face. He knew it. No one could resist the smolder.

Not even a lost princess with a frying pan and a frog.

Rapunzel has an excellent point about the dubious charms of those Prince Charmings! I love it! I especially love her logic and the fact that she hasn't let her happily ever after start doing her thinking for her.

And, dude, "passionate head nodding". That was so perfectly phrased for Maximus. Win, my friend. WIN.

Well, I give all the credit to [livejournal.com profile] just_a_dram. It was her use of the word Charming (and her subsequent comment to me) in He's a Rebel that inspired this fic.

LOL, I swear Max is too amusing. Going through the caps yesterday, it is so funny seeing all the expression on his face. LOL

That is one of the things I absolutely loved about Tangled, how strong Rapunzel is. She is a great role model for young in kids in that she isn't a damsel in distress in need of rescue. She uses the tools at her disposal to make her way into the world.

Fabulous story too ^____^ I love Eugene's reactions!! Especially about the smolder...perfect characterization ^____^

Oh yeah, Rapunzel's strength is totally one of my favorite things about the movie. No waiting for some prince to save her! :D

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it! :D :D

Such a great moment! And Eugene is right - no one can resist the smolder. And Rapunzel's assessment is right on - they save each other. Sigh.

Hello! Just wandered over here by way of [livejournal.com profile] just_a_dram (and your review of my fic which she recced to you), and I'm delighted to find you write Tangled fic, too! This had me laughing so hard--of course the other Disney Princesses are in neighboring kingdoms!

"Plus, you had thugs, not faeries, break you out of prison," Rapunzel added with an impish grin.

Well, that was definitely more manly, Eugene conceded.

This. Is made of so much win. It's so in-character with both of them to be completely unimpressed with the Disney classics. And really, this works because Tangled actually is such an homage to the Golden Age of Disney.

Love it! Now off to read more...

Hi there! :D :D Oh yeah, I'm afraid my muse is being held hostage by several major Tangled plot bunnies. I'm already working on two Tangled Big Bang stories (and trying to talk myself out of a third! LOL)

I am so glad that you enjoyed this. This fic is totally inspired by the conversation with [livejournal.com profile] just_a_dram. It was like, Poof! "Congratulations, you are a the proud mama of a new plot bunny!"

Thank you so much for your kind words! :D :D

Wow, two Big Bangs? That's ambitious! Good luck!
yappichick: Tangled: Rapunzel Awe[personal profile] yappichick on May 27th, 2011 04:20 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it is totally going to bring my annual word count up to previously unknown levels, but if I don't write them, I'm afraid the plot bunnies will gobble me alive. LOL

Thanks for the luck. I'm going to need it come deadline time. :D :D

Would talking you *into* a third make me a bad person? An evil f-lister? Or just a greedy enabler, because I could live with that. ;)

No, that would make you a dedicated fangirl...something I can related to very much. LOL

Cover your ears.

Eeeeh!

Okay, ahem.

Prince Charming is a total fraud! Blondie knows it. We know it. (He actually got visibly perturbed when my hubby asked him what his military rank was when we had dinner with the characters--issues!) Cinderella needs to find herself a Eugene.

Now, I will quote from the entirety.

"You're always looking after my frying pan."

Eugene felt a smile tug on his lips. Despite living in the castle with dozen of palace guards at her disposal, Blondie still insisted on bringing her frying pan with her in her room every night.

That's both so very sweet and also sad, which is kind of how I view the situation in general. She must have lingering issues, even though she is brave and upbeat and full of enthusiasm to live. Thankfully, she's got Eugene alongside her, also adjusting to a very different life.

So they can save each other...ohhhh, so sweet. Grinning like mad over here. There is something so unique about their dynamic in that neither one really outshines the other. Generally in Disney either the hero or the heroine is the really interesting character, the one who kicks butt, or has all the best lines. They're balanced so well.

"Besides," she said, not lifting her head from its position, "none of them can smolder the way you can."

A cocky grin spread over his face. He knew it. No one could resist the smolder.

I wonder if Rapunzel knows exactly what she's doing by paying him that particular compliment. :)

LOVE! So much love! for this!

When oh when will the big bangs be over so I can begin to gobble up the rest of your Tangled awesomeness? Wah--waiting is hard.

Dude, I am absolutely beaming over here. Beaming I tell you! :D :D I am so glad that you liked this fic!! And yeah, they are awesomely balanced...another reason why I love these crazy kids so much.

Thank you soooo much for your enthusiasm and awesome feedback! It's like chocolate-covered awesomeness for my muse.

You, chickie, totally rule :D :D
