Author's Notes: Written for [info]sgmajorshipper for the Holiday Fic meme, part 2.  No, she didn't ask for a second fic.  This one kind of snuck up on me.  Takes place a few years after "Ringing in the Season" (But you don't have to read it to understand it.)

Timeline notes: I know in the Legacy series, (spoilers) Teyla and Kanaan are no longer an item so let's say this story takes place in that universe.

John admired his handiwork.

He pulled the chair back to its original position, still gazing at the mistletoe that hung above the doorframe to the entrance to the mess hall.

Perfect.

Moments earlier, he had called Teyla to the room, his plan in place.  In a couple of minutes, she would walk in and he would be able to share his favorite Christmas tradition with her.  Finally.  A smile lazily crept over his lips as he thought about being able to kiss Teyla under the mistletoe.

His joy, however, was short-lived.

Through the door's window, he could see her walking towards to mess hall with Carson.  No! This wasn't how it was supposed to happen!  She was supposed to go come see John alone.

Quickly, he grabbed the chair and shoved it by the door so he could grab the mistletoe from its place.  Just as his fingertips touched the green leaves, he saw Carson pause, give Teyla an apologetic look and start walking in the opposite direction.

John let out a sign of relief.

His plan could still work!

He jumped off the chair and moved it back under the table.  He ran his hand through his hair, trying to look nonchalant as Teyla took another couple of steps towards the mess hall.  But, before his excitement could build, he saw Rodney running down the hall to catch up with Teyla.

John sent a look heavenwards.

Once again, he scooted the chair under the mistletoe's position, ready to take it down.

Once again, he did all of that work for no reason; after a brief exchange, Teyla shook her head.  Then, Rodney turned around and went on his way.

And, once again, John returned the chair to its rightful place.

That was it.  He was not going to move that chair until Teyla walked in the--

WAIT! WAS THAT WOOLSEY APPROACHING TEYLA?

The chair was under the mistletoe in less than a second.  He reached up and grabbed the now-annoying branch and shoved it in his pocket as the two of them walked in the room together.

They looked at him, precariously balancing on the edge of the seat, curiously.

Crap.

"Do I want to ask what you're doing standing on the chair like that, Colonel?" asked Woolsey.

"Probably not," he answered truthfully.  Sure, everyone around the base knew he and Teyla were dating, but Woolsey in particular wasn't a fan of public displays of affection.

The man eyed John for a second before turning back to Teyla.  "I'll discuss the details of the meeting with you at a later time."  He turned around and walked away, muttering something about wishing how he wished people would use chairs in their intended manner.

John awkwardly stepped down from the chair.

Teyla smiled, amused.  Then something caught her eye.  "John, you seem to have something sticking out of your pocket."  She reached over...

"No! Don't!"

...and pulled out the piece of mistletoe.

John flashed her a chagrined smile.  "Surprise?"

She raised an eyebrow.  "Is this what I believe it is?"

John swallowed.  He knew there was a pretty good chance she knew exactly what it was.  "Yeah."

"I believe," she said with a playful smile, "it must be over both of our heads, correct?"  She raised up and held the branch above them.

Not wanting to miss his opportunity, John ducked under the mistletoe and covered her lips with his own.

He pulled back slightly, a smile on his lips.  "Merry Christmas, Teyla."

"Merry Christmas, John."
